Life has been a tad busy for the past year or so. Fellowship exams, in the context of growing family and long work hours means blogging fell by the wayside. I intend to change that now.
I passed my exam, which means I will be finished my surgical training in Februrary 2014. My life has already changed, as I am given more responsibility, and also take more ownership of what I do. I've operated on patients previously, but when things went bad, it felt like a shared responsibility. Now it's a lot more visceral.
Next year I will be continuing in general surgery. I will be working as a Fellow at The Northern Hospital in Melbourne. I will be on call for surgical emergencies, and probably operating late into the night when required. I will also be working in an area of general surgery that I have not spent a lot of time in before. It should be a year of new experiences.
In February 2015, I will finish up at the Northern and I have applied to work for a short term in a non-denominational christian mission hospital in Nepal. I've never been to Nepal. I've never been a missionary. And I've never asked so much of my family as when I ask them to come along for the ride. I hope it will be an opportunity to do something special. However, it should also be a time of new experiences.
I will attempt to share my journey as I develop into a junior consultant. I hope to see you come along for the ride.
Wow Cris, that’s fantastic!
You might remember that I have an Aunty and Uncle who have spent many years as doctors in Nepal. If you want contacts or tips as the time gets closer, hit me up for their deets.
